The Most Traditional and Famous Cake Shop in Hong Kong.
Hang Heung Cake Shop was opened in 1920. At the beginning, it was called the Hang Heung Teahouse, serving dim sum and Chinese dish to customers. While many people were queuing up and waiting to go into the teahouse, Hang Heung used sweetened winter melon as main ingredient and made the wife cake. Later on, the wife cake became more and more popular among customers. In 1980, Hang Heung closed the teahouse and focus on making Chinese cakes and pastries. Nowadays, wife cake becomes the best-selling product in Hang Heung. It sells about 25,000 wife cakes every day.
The Famous and best selling item: Wife Cake!
The History of Wife Cake:
Wife cake is a traditional Chinese pastry with flaky and thin skin made with winter melon, almond paste, and sesame, and spiced with five spice powder. There is a legend about the wife cake. Many years ago, a couple lived a very poor life. One day, the husband's father became very sick. The couple spent all their money on the man’s father, but he didn’t recover. Finally, the wife sold herself as a slave in exchange for money to buy medicine for her father-in-law. Once the husband learned about what his wife did, he made a cake filled with sweetened winter melon and almond. His cake became so popular that he was able to earn enough money to buy his wife back. People then called this pastry as wife cake. Hang Heung is very famous for its wife cake as the outside of the cake is crispy, but inside is soft.
Besides wife cakes, hand-made egg roll is also very famous. The egg roll is crispy and full of egg smell. The staff said the egg roll is very famous as it is crispy and full of egg smell. The egg roll is not greasy, that you will want to eat more. Besides these 2 items, Hang Heung also sells other products, such as wedding cakes, moon cakes, pastries. Though there are branches in Kowloon and HK Island, it is worth to buy in Yuen Long as cakes and pastries are freshly made.

The First Heritage Trail in Hong Kong
Ping Shan Heritage Trail is a line of Tang Clan, one of the “Five great Clans” of New Territories. They have lived there since 12th century. Numerous elegant structures built since that time still stand today, bearing testimony to the historical and social developments that have taken place over the past centuries. It gives us an opportunity to learn more about the traditional life in the NT.
When we visited the Tang Ancestral Hall and Yu Kiu Ancestral Hall, it was so lucky that we met a local gentry. He told us that the Tang Ancestral Hall was the main hall, uses as a venue for worship, festivals, ceremonies and clan meetings. For Yu Kiu Ancestral Hall, it was built by generation brothers of the clan. It was also used as school in the past.
Duilians can be easily found!
